Lockout Tagout (LOTO)

Lockout Tagout, also known as LOTO, is not only a good practice, but also a legal requirement. OSHA has a rule that requires employers to have LOTO programs in place, as outlined in 29 CFR 1910.147.

In essence, LOTO helps prevent unexpected startup of machinery during maintenance or repair. If energy sources of the machines are not properly isolated and secured, serious injuries, fatalities, property damage, and environmental devastation can result. In addition to preventing such issues, facilities also benefit from LOTO by reducing downtime, costs, and liability that can result.
